An evening under the sign of Light
The first edition of the MLNR Ball at the Bucharest National Opera
There are evenings that pass. And there are evenings that remain.
September 20, 2025 undoubtedly falls into the second category: an evening when tradition, culture, and brotherhood came together under the sign of Light, marking a milestone in the recent history of the Grand National Lodge of Romania.
Hosted by the Bucharest National Opera, the event marked a double symbolic milestone: the opening of the Masonic Year 6025–6026 and the start of the Jubilee Year, which celebrates 145 years since the Enlightenment in Romania (1880–2025). A bridge across time, built on memory, rigor, and vision.
Culture as a form of continuity
Under the vision of Grand Master Cătălin Tohăneanu, 2025 has been proclaimed the “Year of Culture in MLNR.” This choice is not accidental, but deeply meaningful: a tribute to the values that give substance to national identity, in full harmony with the celebration of the 175th anniversary of Mihai Eminescu’s birth.
In this context, the MLNR Ball has become more than just a social event. It has become a living bridge between the rigor of Masonic tradition and the depth of Romanian culture, between spiritual discipline and creative freedom.
The harmony of the arts, under the baton of excellence
Designed as a Viennese Ball Evening, the event brought together over 500 guests—Brothers, foreign delegates, and dialogue partners—in a setting of high artistic quality.
Under the baton of maestro Daniel Jinga, the Orchestra, Choir, and Ballet of the National Opera created a soundscape of rare elegance, in which every detail was measured and every emotion was allowed to express itself.
The audience was treated to masterpieces of universal lyricism, performed by internationally renowned voices:
- soprano Anita Hartig and tenor Ștefan Pop, in moments of pure intensity;
- mezzo-soprano Maria Miron-Sîrbu, baritone Iordache Basalic, and bass Iustinian Zetea, who completed an exceptional artistic tableau.
From the ancestral force in O Fortuna (Carmina Burana) to the suspended hope in Nessun dorma, every note resonated with the Masonic ideal of continuous improvement.
“Great values are built through unity.”
In his speech, the Grand Master reaffirmed the role of the MLNR as an active social partner and promoter of authentic elites:
“Unity, involvement, and mutual support are the foundation on which we build the future. This ball is a symbol of our discreet but constant strength to bring together tradition, culture, and fraternity.”
A clear message, delivered without exaggeration, but with the weight of conviction.
Looking towards the Romanian Athenaeum
The first edition of the MLNR Ball opens a busy calendar of cultural events, which will culminate in the summer of 2026 with the Excellence Awards Gala hosted by the Romanian Athenaeum.
It is the expression of a committed journey: that of translating Masonic values into visible, coherent, and sustainable actions for society. Remaining faithful to a motto that gains real substance with each such evening: Inspire through thought, not just through execution.
